  • Prof Paul Cairns

< Back Prof. Paul Cairns University of York iGGi Chair Supervisor Paul Cairns is a professor interested in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) generally and specifically on how games work to produce the experiences that players really value. He has looked extensively at immersion and engagement in games but is also developing new ideas on players experiences of challenge and uncertainty. He has been teaching HCI for over twenty years and is particularly interested in the rigorous application of research methods having co-edited the first book on research methods for HCI and written another about doing better statistics in HCI. He strongly believes in self-explanatory book titles. He is also Scholar-in-Residence at The AbleGamers Charity, based in the USA, through which he is working with players and game developers to inform and advance the development of accessible games. With his colleagues there, he produced the Accessible Player Experiences (APX) design patterns and card deck. He is particularly interested in supervising students with a HCI, behavioural sciences, media or computer science background on the following topics: Understanding player experiences Developing new measures of player experience whether based on self-report, physiological or other instruments Accessible player experiences Using games to understand and inform people’s experiences with other interactive systems Research themes: Accessible Games Games with a Purpose Player Experience paul.cairns@york.ac.uk Email Mastodon https://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~pcairns Other links Website https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-cairns-99a1b32/ LinkedIn Twitter Github Themes Accessibility Applied Games Game Data Player Research - Previous Next

  • iGGi at Develop:Brighton 2023 | iGGi PhD

< Back iGGi at Develop:Brighton 2023 Following the previous year’s success, the iGGi stand featured again on the Expo floor of the 2023 Develop:Brighton conference . This year’s Expo saw a record breaking 4970 visitors over the two days of its running (43% up from 3471 in 2022), and many of these visitors dropped by the iGGi stand to chat to us. Shifts at the iGGi stand were covered by the conference-attending iGGi PG Researchers (15 in total) who appreciated a break from their (often solitary) thesis/research work. With its stand presence at the Develop:Brighton Expo, iGGi is promoting the intersection between games industry and research. We are looking to engage the two in conversation. We want to foster ways of knowledge exchange that are mutually beneficial to both sides. If you want to learn more about existing pathways of knowledge exchange between iGGi and games companies, you can check out our Industry Info + KE page , but we are also always open for new ideas and formats. Please do get in touch if you require any further information. Previous 14 Jul 2023 Next

  • Oliver Withington

< Back Oliver Withington Queen Mary University of London iGGi PG Researcher Available for placement Ollie Withington is a researcher working on novel methods for visualising and comparing the output spaces of generative systems in the world of video-games. Following three years working in software development for a healthcare management firm, he embarked upon an MSc in Computing and Information systems in 2018 to boost his professional skill-set. He fell in love with the world of AI research through the work started during his final thesis and this, combined with a lifelong love of playing video-games and thinking about their design led to joining the IGGI programme in 2020. He lives in London with his wife and young daughter and when he is not writing about, thinking about, or playing games he can often be found either in the local bouldering gym, or in the park with his family (especially on the rare days when London graces us with sunshine). A description of Ollie's research: While Ollie is interested in almost all aspects of game research and development, he is especially interested in procedural content generation systems and whether they can be made more consistently helpful for designers and interesting to end users. His research is currently focused on developing novel methods for visualising the possible outputs from content generation systems. While automatic content generation as a field is thriving, there has been comparatively little work done on novel methods for comparing generators to each other, something he aims to remedy. Ollie's work is focused on using novel data reduction and projection approaches to produce information-rich 2D visualisations of the output spaces of generative systems, allowing for easy assessment of output diversity and system character. The hope is that this work could help game designers and researchers alike make more informed choices about which generators are optimal for their purposes and how to optimise them, as well as making the outputs of these systems more interesting to players. His latest publication 'On the Evaluation of Procedural Level Generation Systems ' was presented at FDG 2024. owithington@hotmail.co.uk Email Mastodon http://owithington.co.uk Other links Website https://www.linkedin.com/in/oliver-withington-909052bb/ LinkedIn https://twitter.com/o_withington Twitter https://github.com/KrellFace Github Supervisors: Dr Jeremy Gow Dr Laurissa Tokarchuk Featured Publication(s): Exploring Minecraft Settlement Generators with Generative Shift Analysis HarmonyMapper: Generating Emotionally Divers Chord Progressions for Games.
